That's very generous wishfulthings, thank you. I'm going to wait a little longer (until the person who owns the laptop gets back to me) before I decide to try the repair or to just pick up a replacement. Flatdev has me very concerned that I'll be going through a bunch of these chips until I find the real culprit :)

Well looks like success :D . My MOSFETS were OK so all I ended up replacing was the MAX1999 power supply controller chip and all appears to be well. I've have a few days of faultless operation which would have been impossible prior to changing the IC. Hope this helps some others.

Yea just the MAX1999 was replaced. The fan was cleaned out and various other components were resoldered in an earlier attempt to find dry joints on connections but it was replacing the MAX1999 that did the job. I'm going to use some adhesive thermal film on the top of the MAX1999 and a bit of aluminium as a makeshift heatsink to try and avoid the MAX1999 from overheating again. I'll let you all know if this appears successful in a few weeks.

Well looks like it was a short time fix...died again yesterday (11th Feb) so only got 3-4 wks out of it. This time it happened when it was running and I pulled out the AC power adapter !!! I'll have one more go at fixing it and then I think its time for the bin

any more info on this as my dv1000 is the same. sometimes i can get as far as log on screen before it powers off but usually it only powers on for 10 seconds and then shuts down. I have to leave it off for about 30 mins before it powers again but it always shuts off before i get to log in. I have the motherboard out now and cant see any visual damage, Its out of warranty and I dont see any point in buying a motherboard for it if there is a flaw with this board.

I have one of these that powers on but displays no video and does not output any codes to a mini pci post card. Initially it would not power on at all, then I reflowed the DC jack and one mosfet that appeared to have been misaligned. It started powering on again, but would not display video. There is power getting to the northbridge/gpu as evidenced by voltage detected on surface mount caps on that chipset as well as throughout the board. No obvious signs of damage and no overheating components. I have a ton of maxim chips so I think I am going to try replacing the Max1999 (PS Ctrl) and Max8743 (PWM) at the same time and then try powering it back on. I am worried that doing so may blow them out again if something else is wrong, but I am lucky enough to have extra chips to try again if I have to. I am open to any suggestions.
